Red Rock Running Company is a local running shoe store. They also host group runs and put on timed races. They often work with non-profits and small local groups as well. This summer, they put on a massive contest for a $10,000 prize. Every Strava run you tagged them in was an entry to win. The prize giveaway was at the Labor Day 5K, and you had to be present to win.
We’re all a sucker for a big prize, and since I was participating in a few other Strava challenges anyway, this made sense. Additionally, the race was in a part of town I don’t usually get to.
The RRRC Labor Day 5k Race
Packet Pickup was at their location up north, so I just did race day pickup. Everything was well-organized, with no wait time.

The course was interesting, as it was my first time at this park. W. Wayne Bunker Family Park alone isn’t quite big enough for an interesting 5k. But it seems to be the start of Lone Mountain Trail, which extends south to Summerlin Parkway, connecting quite a few parks along the way.
This particular portion of Lone Mountain Trail circles a retention basin. Instead of extending further south to Buckskin Basin Park, we did this circle twice. So the majority of the views were of concrete.
Post-Race and Swag
Immediate post-race recovery was sparse. The obligatory bananas were present, but not much for electrolyte replacement.
The mood was good due to the giveaway. However, the announcements weren’t always clear. We wound up leaving before the winner was announced.
The swag was minimal, and that’s not a complaint. If you’ve already got a rack of medals and piles of t-shirts, the minimal route is commendable. The bib was not customized to this race – it was one of their stock bibs, which is also fine.

RRRC Labor Day 5K: Hype Machine
This was a good race. RRRC launches a lot of their 5K runs from Wayne Bunker Park, and I can see why. Would I do this particular run again? Probably not, but would definitely use the park as a launch for longer training runs!
