Exploration Peak Park in Mountain's Edge, Las Vegas, NV

Mountains Edge Las Vegas For Runners

Mountain’s Edge is a master-planned community in the southwest area of Las Vegas, NV. It’s marked by Blue Diamond Road to the north and Rainbow on the east, and doesn’t seem to have a southern or western border. It is mostly the zip code 89178 with a small outcropping of 89139 and covers over 2,500 acres of land in the unincorporated town of Enterprise. Similar to its neighbor Southern Highlands, you can expect wide main streets with significant shoulders and uninterrupted sidewalks, at least where developments have been completed. There’s a unique blend of natural beauty and new homes. The Mountains Edge Las Vegas area still has development area open.

Parks

The Mountains Edge Las Vegas community includes four great parks:

  • Exploration Park, home of Exploration Peak, an outdoor amphitheater, a splash pad, and a Western-themed park for kids
  • Nathaniel Jones Park, which boasts a lively dog park and basketball courts
  • Mountains Edge Regional Park, with baseball fields, picnic facilities and barbecue facilities
  • Paiute Park, a small park with multi-use turf fields and picnic areas

These public facilities all have bathrooms and drinking fountains, and they’re all good for running. Mountain’s Edge Regional Park is the largest, and has a few neat trails in and around the park that make it a great spot for laps. Exploration Peak Park has the peak for your hill repeats and incline work. The other two parks are rather small, and aren’t great for running by themselves. They do work well in conjunction with some of the wash trails in the area.

Washes and Paseos

The Mountains Edge neighborhood does a great job of pairing flash flood management and incredible outdoor activities with how they’ve planned and constructed their washes. Washes ensure that homes don’t get flooded and roads stay clear in the event that Southern Nevada does get rain. They turned the functional into something beautiful. Residents of Mountain’s Edge get convenient access to green space just outside their back doors. These washes are built with landscaping, a multi-use path, and a few trees to cater to dog owners, parents with strollers, kids accessing public schools, walkers, and of course, runners. The washes don’t have bathrooms or drinking fountains, so take care of business before you enter. There are three main washes in the area:

  • Tenaya Paseo
  • Paseo just south of Blue Diamond Road (name not found)
  • La Baron Paseo Trail

The Tenaya Paseo is really built for residents of the surrounding developments. While some are gated communities and others allow non-resident parking, I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to try to run this particular trail. You’re better off in the open space to the south and west of this trail.

The paseo just south of Blue Diamond can be accessed from the parking lot at the Mountain’s Edge Marketplace, near the main entrance to Mountain Edge. It’s best to park by the PT’s there, as far east as you can get, to run the whole trail. You can also easily connect this trail to Exploration Peak Park. It’s especially helpful when you’re looking at high mileage days, when you can add on an extra 3 miles by starting here.

La Baron Paseo Trail in Mountains Edge Las Vegas

The La Baron Paseo Trail connects Exploration Peak and Nathaniel Jones Park, so runners (and other pedestrians) can easily get from one to the other without interacting with car traffic. It’s also a walking trail and water overflow, so don’t use this trail during rain, however light it may be. The trail passes by Carolyn S Reedom Elementary School, so expect a lot of young children and their parents on the trail around 8-9 AM and 2-3 PM.

Running Trails near Mountain’s Edge

There’s one official trailhead in Mountain’s Edge, the James Brown Trailhead. This leads to the following trail systems:

  • James Brown Trail
  • Cowboy 8 Trail
  • Rip & Tear
  • Alden Quarries

These trails have great views of the natural landscapes in the Las Vegas Valley. They skirt around some mountains, so you may get some elevation and great views. With all trails, bring your own water and proper sun protection. Also note that the trails are open to hikers, cyclists, and runners. Be aware of your surroundings and other folks on the trail.

Races in Mountains Edge Las Vegas

The Candlelighters Superhero 5K usually starts in or near Exploration Peak Park and often takes over part of the road to allow for the volume of runners. This fundraiser includes a superhero cape instead of a t-shirt. If you’ve always wanted to channel your inner Batman or Women Woman while running, this is your race.

In previous years, Triple Dare Running Company’s Deja Vu race was held in Mountain’s Edge, but in 2024, that’s moved over to Whitney Ranch in Henderson.

Mountains Edge Las Vegas is a great place for runners. With wide streets, even sidewalks, plenty of paved and dirt trail options, it’s easy for runners in the area to get their miles in. Whether you are just getting in 5ks or planning marathon training, there’s enough safe running routes for you to play with to avoid boredom.
