Rainbow Family Park and Firefighters Memorial Park are two medium-sized parks in Las Vegas, near the Spring Valley neighborhood. While you usually don’t think of green spaces as part of Spring Valley’s dense urban structure, these parks are a breath of fresh air, each on a different side of Rainbow and Oakey.
Firefighters Memorial Park
Firefighters Memorial Park is just east of Rainbow, south of Oakey, in 89146. The park is about half a mile square, anchored with firefighter sculptures and the memorial in the northwest corner. It has drinking fountains near the children’s playground, but no bathrooms. To the east is a flood reservoir. Doing a loop around the exterior of the park and the reservoir gives you a mile run.
Bonzanza High School is just north of the park. One option to hit 5k is to add Bonanza to your route. This adds half a mile, so two laps of this route works. However, then you have to contend with school busses, drop-offs, and students.
The other option is to head west to Rainbow Family Park, which is just west of Rainbow and south on Oakey in 89117. There’s a half-mile between the parks, giving you a full mile total. The run on Oakey goes past some large older homes and a Baha’i temple, and is well-maintained.
Rainbow Family Park
Rainbow Family Park also is just under a mile around. It has nice windy paths, including a scenic bridge, and shade trees that turn colors in the fall. Along with baseball fields and a workout area, it’s a nice little park tucked away from the hustle on Rainbow itself.
You may see a few folks who may be unhoused or sleeping rough. Unlike Charlie Frias park, these folks don’t seem to live at these parks. As always, stay respectful and you won’t have any trouble.
Running or Walking Route: Rainbow Family Park and Firefighters Memorial Park
Each park is nice on its own. Rainbow Family Park has more trees and cuter paths. Firefighters Memorial Park has the extra distance when you add on the reservoir.
Combining both parks gives you a nice, safe 5k in the western part of town.
