Runners assemble for the World Day of Remembrance at Silverado Ranch Park, Las Vegas

World Day of Remembrance 5K Review

The World Day of Remembrance was an event to honor victims of traffic accidents, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists on Nov 17, 2024. In addition to that memorial aspect, the event aimed at improving basic and advanced safety for running and cycling in Las Vegas. The event was organized by County Commissioner Michael Naft and included a bunch of activities, including:

The running events were managed by Red Rock Running Company, a fantastic resource in Las Vegas for not only individual gear, but for support for events like this one.

The Route

Silverado Ranch Park has a half-mile concrete running path that encircles the park. With all the other events going on, the organizers opted to go outside of the park for most of the route.

We were advised to run on the sidewalks, but in some places on the route, there were no sidewalks. Fortunately, these streets were residential and had low to no traffic for the time we needed them.

There was a small bit in the park itself, which ran along the eastern edge of the park, pretty much straight north and then back south.

The Race

A small field of runners came out to support the cause, so I was left in the dust early on. That meant a lovely, easy run to focus on breathing and pacing, since I had accidentally left my headphones at home. With no elevation gains or drops, it was just a nice chance to run.

Post-Race

The main event was the resource fair and raffle. Organizations came out to provide resources on pedestrian and cyclist safety, as well as emergency response assistance. Chatting with the folks at each table got you a raffle ticket. Raffle prizes included race registration for the Mt Charleston Revel Marathon as well as your choice of runs from Triple Dare Running Company, gift boxes, motorcycle safety gear, and more.

The World Day of Remembrance was a really great event for the community, bringing together different groups that may or may not usually talk to each other. I would absolutely recommend coming out if they do it again next year!

Silverado Ranch Park

Silverado Ranch Park is a great location for families, as there’s plenty of green space, a kids’ playground, baseball diamonds, and plenty of other amenities. The Silverado Ranch Park Recreation Center is on the same plot, making the park a great place even in the summer heat.

If you prefer short runs, sprints, or fartleks, then Silverado Ranch Park can be a great spot, especially for residents of Silverado Ranch and residents of 89183. As the route around the park is half a mile, it takes 6 loops to reach a 5k. So for runners focusing on distance work, it’s not the best option in the area.
